A documentary of this kind usually takes a director, a cinematographer, a stills photographer, an editor, a field researcher, a cultural advisor, and an archivist. On this work, that is one person.

That is not a cost-saving measure.

It is what the material requires. A community that has been recorded badly before does not open up to a seven-person crew on a schedule. It opens up to someone it already knows, who can hold a camera and a rattle in the same week, and who will still be there in five years.

The technical craft and the standing in the community are not two separate qualifications that happen to sit on one résumé.

Each one is the reason the other produced anything. Take away the relationships, and there is no footage to cut. Take away the craft, and there is a shoebox of tapes no one can watch.

That combination is why productions, colleges and museums bring this studio in — not only to shoot, but to advise on whether a project can responsibly be made at all.

Bringing an advisor in at the script stage changes what a production can do—bringing one in during the final week changes almost nothing.
Engagements include script and treatment review, protocol guidance, on-set advising, language and material culture accuracy, curriculum design, and an honest assessment of whether a project should proceed as written..
